Reptile UVB Lighting Guide: How to Check Lamp Output & Basking Position
Installing a UVB lamp is an important part of the enclosure setup for many commonly kept reptiles, but the label on the bulb is only the beginning.
What matters is the ultraviolet light that actually reaches the animal.
A lamp can be operating normally while the UV reaching the basking position is reduced by:
- excessive distance
- enclosure mesh
- glass or plastic
- poor lamp positioning
- fixture design
- ageing of the lamp
- changes to the enclosure layout
For many reptile species, suitable UVB exposure contributes to vitamin D3 production and calcium metabolism. Veterinary guidance notes that UVB can be particularly important in reptiles that rely on skin production of vitamin D3.
However, more UVB is not automatically better.
Different reptile species have different natural behaviours and exposure requirements, so the objective is to provide appropriate UV within a correctly designed enclosure—not simply the strongest lamp available.
What Is UVB?
Ultraviolet light sits outside the part of the light spectrum that humans can see.
Two ultraviolet ranges commonly discussed in reptile keeping are:
- UVA
- UVB
They have different biological effects.
UVB is particularly important in reptile husbandry because exposure can enable the skin of many reptile species to synthesise vitamin D3, which contributes to normal calcium metabolism.
This is one reason appropriate lighting is an important part of reptile enclosure design.
But simply seeing visible light from a lamp does not tell you how much UVB is reaching the animal.
A lamp may still appear bright even when its useful UV output has changed.
Does Every Reptile Need the Same UVB?
No.
This is one of the most important things to understand.
A reptile that naturally spends much of the day exposed to strong daylight may have very different requirements from an animal that usually occupies shaded forest environments, crevices or nocturnal habitats.
Species can also differ in:
- basking behaviour
- activity times
- habitat
- natural exposure
- enclosure requirements
There is therefore no single UVB percentage, bulb type or distance that is correct for every reptile.
Even veterinary literature notes that the exact UVB requirements of every reptile species are not completely established.
Start with reliable husbandry guidance for the specific species you keep.
The Basking Position Matters More Than the Lamp Label
A lamp might say 5%, 10%, 12% or another UVB rating.
That tells you something about the product, but it does not tell you precisely what the reptile experiences.
The animal receives UV at its actual position in the enclosure.
For example, consider two identical lamps:
Enclosure A
The basking platform sits relatively close to the lamp with minimal obstruction.
Enclosure B
The animal sits much farther below the lamp and the UV passes through dense mesh first.
The reptile in Enclosure B may receive considerably less UV despite both owners purchasing exactly the same bulb.
Research measuring common reptile-enclosure materials has confirmed that screening and other materials can attenuate UVB radiation.
That is why lighting should be evaluated at the animal's basking position, not only at the lamp.
Why Distance Changes UVB Exposure
UV intensity falls as distance from the source increases.
That means moving a basking platform farther from a UVB lamp can materially reduce the amount reaching the reptile.
Likewise, moving the animal substantially closer can increase exposure.
Merck Veterinary Manual specifically notes the effect of lamp distance and recommends following manufacturer instructions for hanging height and replacement intervals.
This is also why copying another keeper's setup purely from a photograph can be misleading.
Their:
- lamp model
- reflector
- fixture
- distance
- enclosure top
- basking height
may all be different.
Measure From the Reptile, Not the Floor
When checking lamp distance, measure from the lamp to the place where the reptile's body will actually be during basking.
Do not simply measure:
lamp → enclosure floor
if the animal spends its time on a branch, rock or raised platform.
A basking animal may sit 20 or 30 cm above the floor, significantly changing its actual distance from the UV source.
This becomes even more important with climbing species.
Whenever you:
- add a taller basking rock
- reposition a branch
- change substrate depth
- replace the enclosure
- lower the lamp
recheck the effective distance.
Can UVB Pass Through Glass?
Ordinary glass is a major issue when positioning UVB lighting.
Merck Veterinary Manual notes that sunlight filtered through most glass or plastic contains very little usable ultraviolet radiation for reptiles.
That means placing an enclosure beside a bright window is not equivalent to giving a reptile unfiltered sunlight.
Likewise, do not assume a UVB lamp positioned above a glass barrier will deliver the same exposure as an unobstructed installation.
Always follow the lighting manufacturer's installation requirements.
What About Mesh Enclosure Tops?
Mesh is more complicated.
Unlike glass, mesh may allow UV through—but it can still reduce the amount reaching the animal.
The amount of reduction depends on characteristics such as:
- wire thickness
- hole size
- mesh density
- material
- lamp position
A published study examining materials used in reptile enclosures found measurable attenuation of UVB through air-permeable screening.
So if a lamp is installed above mesh, do not automatically assume the animal is receiving the same level shown in a lamp chart measured without that obstruction.
Create a UV Gradient
A reptile enclosure should not necessarily provide identical UV exposure everywhere.
Many species benefit from having a choice between:
- stronger exposure around the basking area
- intermediate exposure
- lower-UV or shaded areas
This allows the animal to move between different micro-environments.
RSPCA guidance for bearded dragons, for example, recommends creating a light-to-shade or photogradient rather than bathing the entire enclosure in the same UV intensity.
The exact gradient required still depends on species.
The broader principle is important:
give the animal choice.
UVB and Heat Should Make Sense Together
Many basking reptiles naturally seek warm, well-lit areas.
That means the enclosure's thermal and lighting layout should work together rather than creating conflicting signals.
Merck notes that placing heat and UVB sources in relation to the basking area can help provide exposure while the animal is naturally thermoregulating.
For many basking species, it therefore makes little sense to position:
heat at one end
and
the useful UVB zone somewhere completely different.
Again, species requirements differ, but enclosure design should encourage natural behaviour.
UVB Lamps Lose Output With Use
A UVB bulb does not necessarily maintain identical output throughout its entire life.
The visible light may still work even after UV performance has changed.
Research measuring artificial UVB sources over time has demonstrated that lamp output can vary with age and distance.
Veterinary guidance therefore recommends replacing UVB lamps according to manufacturer instructions and, where possible, measuring their output periodically.
Do not use the fact that a bulb still lights up as proof that its UVB performance is unchanged.
When Should You Replace a UVB Bulb?
There is no universal replacement schedule for every lamp.
Different technologies and manufacturers specify different service periods.
The best approach is:
- record when the lamp was installed
- keep the manufacturer's replacement guidance
- periodically check its output
- replace it when measurements or manufacturer guidance indicate it is due
Writing the installation date somewhere discreetly on the fixture or keeping it in your phone can make this much easier.
Do not guess how old a lamp is several months later.
Why Routine UVB Checks Are Useful
Checking a lighting setup isn't only useful when the bulb is old.
There are several situations where a comparison can help.
When Installing a New Lamp
Confirm that UV is actually reaching the intended basking position.
After Moving the Lamp
A change in height changes exposure.
After Changing the Basking Platform
Your reptile may now sit closer to or farther from the light.
After Adding Mesh or Changing the Enclosure
The material between the lamp and reptile may alter transmission.
As a Lamp Ages
Comparing against earlier readings may reveal declining output.
When Comparing Fixtures
Reflectors and fixture positioning can change how light is distributed.
UVB Test Cards: What Do They Do?
A colour-change UV test card provides a quick qualitative indication that ultraviolet radiation is reaching the card.

- checking whether UV is detectable at basking level
- comparing the same enclosure before and after repositioning a lamp
- checking a new lamp against an older lamp
- comparing locations within an enclosure

How to Use a UVB Test Card
Step 1 — Identify the Basking Position
Work out where the reptile's body actually sits while basking.
Step 2 — Hold the Card at That Position
Do not hold it directly underneath the bulb simply because that is convenient.
Put the sensor where the reptile receives the light.
Step 3 — Expose the Sensor to the Lamp
Point the colour-change area toward the UV source according to the card instructions.
Step 4 — Observe the Colour Change
The white sensor area changes towards purple when exposed to ultraviolet light.
Step 5 — Compare Under Consistent Conditions
If you want to compare readings over time, try to keep these factors the same:
- lamp
- distance
- fixture
- mesh
- card angle
- basking location
Consistency makes the comparison more useful.
Why Test at Basking Level?
Imagine holding the test card 10 cm beneath a UV lamp and seeing a strong response.
That does not necessarily tell you what is happening 40 cm farther down where the reptile sits.
Likewise, testing next to the lamp but outside the enclosure ignores any mesh or other obstruction between the source and animal.
The relevant question is:
Is UV reaching the place the reptile actually uses?
That is why basking-level testing is more informative than simply proving that the lamp emits something.
What Can a Colour-Change UV Card Tell You?
A qualitative card can help indicate:
UV is present at the test location.
It can also be useful for relative comparisons when conditions remain consistent.
For example:
- old lamp versus new lamp
- higher versus lower basking platform
- before versus after moving a fixture
- one enclosure position versus another
This makes it a convenient routine-check tool.
What Can't a UVB Test Card Tell You?
This part is extremely important.
A colour-change card does not provide:
- an exact UV Index
- an exact UVB percentage
- calibrated irradiance
- a precise species-specific exposure measurement
- confirmation that a particular reptile's husbandry is correct
A darker colour should not be interpreted as:
“My reptile is definitely receiving the perfect amount of UVB.”
It only provides a qualitative indication.
For precise measurement, a suitable calibrated UV meter is the more appropriate tool. RSPCA's bearded dragon guidance, for example, specifically recommends using a UV Index meter to check the enclosure's UV gradient.
UV Card vs UV Index Meter
These tools serve different purposes.
Colour-Change UV Card
Useful for:
- quick checks
- simple comparisons
- confirming detectable UV
- inexpensive routine monitoring
Calibrated UV Index Meter
Useful for:
- numerical measurements
- establishing an enclosure UV gradient
- checking species-specific targets
- more precise lamp placement
A test card is therefore best viewed as a screening and comparison tool, not a replacement for a calibrated meter where exact exposure needs to be established.
Don't Use Colour Alone to Choose Lamp Distance
If the test card reacts strongly, do not automatically keep lowering or raising the lamp until you achieve the darkest possible result.
The darkest response is not necessarily the correct target.
More UV does not automatically mean better husbandry.
Research on some newer UVB-emitting technologies has highlighted that inappropriate ultraviolet spectra or excessive exposure can create health risks, reinforcing the importance of species-appropriate lighting rather than simply maximising output.
Follow reliable species guidance.
Check Several Areas of the Enclosure
One useful way to use a test card is to compare multiple positions.
Try:
Position 1 — Basking zone
Position 2 — Mid-enclosure
Position 3 — Shaded area
You may notice the response changing as you move away from the UV source.
That can help you understand the rough shape of the light gradient.
Again, it is a relative comparison, not a substitute for numerical UV Index measurement.
Check Again After Rearranging the Terrarium
Reptile enclosures evolve.
You may eventually:
- add a larger hide
- replace substrate
- install climbing branches
- raise the basking platform
- change the enclosure top
- move the lamp
- change the reflector
Any of these can change the relationship between your reptile and the light source.
If the basking position changes, reassess the UV setup.
Don't Forget Shade
It is easy to focus so heavily on providing UV that the other half of the enclosure design gets overlooked.
Reptiles should generally have an opportunity to move away from intense lighting.
For appropriate species, this may include:
- hides
- foliage
- shaded areas
- lower exposure zones
RSPCA's reptile lighting guidance emphasises creating a gradient between stronger light and shade so the reptile has behavioural choice.
Natural Sunlight Through a Window Isn't a Replacement
A sunny room can look extremely bright.
That does not mean the enclosure is receiving useful UVB through the window.
Most ordinary window glass filters UVB very effectively.
Therefore:
bright room ≠ suitable reptile UVB exposure
If your reptile requires artificial UVB lighting, provide lighting designed and installed for that purpose.
What About Taking Reptiles Outside?
Unfiltered natural sunlight can provide ultraviolet exposure, but outdoor reptile care introduces additional risks and variables.
These include:
- overheating
- escape
- predators
- inappropriate ambient temperature
- pesticide exposure
- stress
Do not suddenly move an indoor reptile into direct Australian sun purely to “give it more UVB.”
Outdoor exposure needs to be appropriate for the species and environmental conditions.

Choosing Only From the Percentage on the Box
Lamp type and installation matter too.
Ignoring Distance
The level at the reptile changes as distance changes.
Ignoring Mesh
Screening can reduce UV reaching the enclosure.
Putting UVB Behind Glass
Most ordinary glass blocks much of the useful UV.
Testing Beside the Lamp Instead of at Basking Level
The reptile's position is what matters.
Assuming Visible Light Means UVB Is Still Strong
UVB output can change as lamps age.
Trying to Maximise UV
Higher is not automatically safer.
Using One Setup for Every Species
Different reptiles have different requirements.
A Simple UVB Check Routine
You can make lighting checks part of normal enclosure maintenance.
When Installing the Lamp
Record:
- lamp model
- installation date
- fixture
- basking distance
During Routine Checks
Look for:
- lamp movement
- fixture damage
- changed basking distance
- damaged mesh
- changes to enclosure layout
Periodically
Check UV at the animal's basking position.
When Something Changes
Test again after:
- changing the lamp
- moving the fixture
- changing the basking platform
- modifying the enclosure
This creates a much more consistent approach than installing a lamp and forgetting about it.

Good Reptile Lighting Is About the Whole Setup
A UVB bulb should not be considered in isolation.
The useful setup includes:
- the lamp
- the fixture
- the distance
- the enclosure material
- the basking position
- the shaded areas
- the species being kept
Changing one part can change the final exposure.
That is why periodically checking the actual basking area makes more sense than simply trusting that the bulb is still performing exactly as it did when new.
Install lighting according to species-appropriate guidance, follow the lamp manufacturer's instructions, provide areas where your reptile can move away from stronger exposure and check the setup again whenever something changes.
