    First Freshwater Aquarium Setup: A Beginner Checklist

    Setting up your first freshwater aquarium is much easier when you treat it as a small living system rather than simply a glass tank filled with water.

    Fish produce waste. Uneaten food and decaying plant material also break down. A working biological filter needs to process those wastes, and the water needs to remain appropriate for the particular species you eventually keep.

    That means one of the most important parts of starting an aquarium happens before the first fish goes in.

    A good beginner setup can be broken into a few stages:

    1. choose the aquarium and location
    2. decide what fish you eventually want to keep
    3. install substrate, decorations and equipment
    4. prepare the water
    5. establish biological filtration
    6. test the aquarium
    7. introduce compatible fish carefully
    8. maintain the system consistently

    The aquarium does not need to be complicated.

    It does need to be prepared.

    Decide What You Want to Keep Before Buying Everything

    It is tempting to buy a tank first and choose fish later.

    A better approach is to research the animals you are interested in before finalising the setup.

    Freshwater fish differ in:

    • adult size
    • temperature requirements
    • water chemistry
    • social behaviour
    • territorial behaviour
    • swimming space
    • group-size requirements
    • compatibility with other species

    A fish that is tiny in a shop may also become much larger as an adult.

    Plan around adult requirements, not just the size of the fish on purchase day.

    Choose an Appropriate Aquarium Size

    In practice, less water also means there is less volume available to dilute waste and buffer changes.

    A filled aquarium becomes heavy and inconvenient to move.

    Choose its final position before filling it.

    Add the Substrate

    Rinse substrate when recommended by the manufacturer to remove excess dust before it enters the aquarium.

    When choosing decorative material, consider more than appearance.

    Bottom-dwelling fish, burrowing species and planted aquariums can have specific substrate needs.

    Add Rocks, Wood and Hiding Areas

    Aquarium decorations can create:

    • hiding places
    • visual barriers
    • territories
    • planting areas
    • a more natural-looking environment

    Arrange heavier decorations securely before fish are introduced.

    Not every planted tank needs complicated fertilisation or high-powered lighting.

    Remove obviously decaying plant material during maintenance because decomposing organic matter contributes to the aquarium's waste load. RSPCA Australia notes that decaying plants, uneaten food and fish waste ultimately contribute to ammonia production.

    Install the Filter Before Adding Fish

    Filtration is one of the most important pieces of aquarium equipment.

    RSPCA Australia describes three broad filtration functions:

    Mechanical filtration catches suspended debris.

    Chemical filtration can remove particular substances depending on the media used.

    Biological filtration provides surfaces for beneficial bacteria that process toxic nitrogenous wastes.

    Of these, biological filtration is fundamental to establishing a stable freshwater aquarium.

    Choose a filter appropriately sized for the aquarium and the livestock you eventually intend to keep.

    Understanding the Aquarium Nitrogen Cycle

    This is the section every first-time aquarium owner should understand.

    Fish release ammonia as a metabolic waste product. Uneaten food, fish faeces and decaying plant material also contribute to ammonia as they break down. Ammonia can be toxic to fish.

    A mature biological filter contains bacteria that process these wastes.

    In simplified form:

    Ammonia → Nitrite → Nitrate

    The first group of nitrifying bacteria converts ammonia into nitrite.

    Another group converts nitrite into nitrate.

    Ammonia and nitrite are both potentially dangerous to fish, while nitrate is generally less toxic and is managed partly through routine water changes and aquarium maintenance.

    The establishment of these bacterial populations is commonly called cycling the aquarium.

    Why a Brand-New Tank Isn't Automatically Ready for Fish

    A freshly installed filter does not yet contain the mature bacterial population needed to process a normal aquarium waste load.

    That is why simply setting up an aquarium on Saturday and adding a large group of fish on Sunday can lead to serious problems.

    RSPCA Australia states that a new biological filter typically takes around four to six weeks to establish under the process it describes, while Merck notes that a tropical aquarium biofilter can take up to about eight weeks depending on circumstances.

    The exact time should therefore be determined by water testing, not by counting a fixed number of days.

    What Is Fishless Cycling?

    Fishless cycling establishes the biofilter before intentionally stocking the aquarium with fish.

    Merck Veterinary Manual describes fishless cycling as setting up the aquarium without fish and supplying an ammonia source while monitoring ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. Once the system can process the ammonia and both ammonia and nitrite have returned to zero, fish can be introduced.

    This avoids deliberately exposing fish to the elevated ammonia and nitrite that can occur while a new biological filter is developing.

    For your first aquarium, seek detailed guidance for the particular fishless-cycling method and ammonia source you choose rather than improvising quantities.

    Don't Cycle a Tank by Simply Sacrificing Fish

    Older aquarium advice sometimes recommended placing hardy fish into a brand-new tank and letting their waste establish the filter.

    That approach can expose those animals to harmful ammonia and nitrite.

    Merck notes that gradually cycling by adding fish can result in elevated ammonia or nitrite and may be inhumane when not carefully managed.

    Where practical, establish the biological filter before stocking rather than treating live fish as part of the filtration process.

    You Need a Water Test Kit

    You cannot reliably judge aquarium water quality by sight.

    Perfectly clear water can still contain problematic levels of dissolved waste.

    During initial cycling, the key parameters include:

    • ammonia
    • nitrite
    • nitrate

    Depending on the fish and local water, you may also need to monitor:

    • pH
    • temperature
    • hardness or other species-relevant parameters

    RSPCA Australia recommends frequent ammonia and nitrite testing while a new aquarium's nitrogen cycle is establishing and continued routine testing after the biological filter has matured.

    What Does a Cycled Aquarium Look Like on a Test?

    The goal is not simply:

    “I can see nitrate.”

    You want evidence that the biological filter is actually processing the waste source.

    RSPCA Australia describes a fully cycled tank as one where nitrate is being produced while ammonia and nitrite test at zero.

    Test according to the cycling method you are following.

    Do not declare the tank ready simply because a certain number of weeks has passed.

    Prepare Tap Water Before It Enters the Aquarium

    Australian tap water may contain chlorine or chloramine used during water treatment.

    These substances need to be dealt with before treated tap water is used in an aquarium.

    RSPCA Australia recommends using an appropriate aquarium water conditioner according to its directions to neutralise chlorine and chloramine.

    Follow the dose on the actual conditioner you purchase.

    Do not assume that simply leaving water sitting overnight will deal with every disinfectant used in your local supply; chloramine in particular requires appropriate treatment.

    Match Temperature to the Fish

    Different freshwater species require different temperatures.

    For a tropical aquarium, a suitable aquarium heater and thermometer are commonly needed.

    RSPCA Australia lists 24–26°C as a general range for many tropical aquarium fish but also stresses species compatibility and proper environmental conditions.

    Do not turn that range into a universal target for every freshwater species.

    Goldfish, tropical community fish and specialist species can have very different requirements.

    Research the species you intend to keep.

    Don't Chase a Universal pH Number

    The same principle applies to pH.

    Different fish originate from different water conditions.

    Stability and suitability for the chosen species matter more than trying to force every freshwater aquarium toward one internet-recommended number.

    RSPCA Australia recommends monitoring pH as part of aquarium water quality and tailoring conditions to the animals being kept.

    Before buying fish, compare their requirements with the water you can realistically maintain.

    Aeration and Oxygen Matter

    The bacteria in the biological filter require oxygen, and fish also depend on oxygen dissolved in the water.

    RSPCA Australia notes that nitrifying bacteria are aerobic and that aeration and water movement support both the biofilter and fish.

    Many filters provide significant surface movement themselves.

    Whether additional aeration is needed depends on the setup, stocking, temperature and species.

    Establish a Light Schedule

    Aquarium lighting should have a purpose.

    It may provide illumination for viewing, support plant growth, or both.

    Leaving the light on continuously is unnecessary and can encourage excessive algae.

    Use a consistent day-and-night schedule suitable for the plants and animals being kept.

    A simple timer can make the routine more consistent.

    Don't Add Too Many Fish at Once

    Even after the aquarium has cycled, stocking should be planned carefully.

    Adding a large number of fish suddenly increases the amount of waste the biological filter must process.

    RSPCA Australia specifically recommends avoiding the introduction of large numbers of fish at once so the filtration bacteria can adapt to the increased waste load.

    Also check compatibility before combining species.

    Research Adult Size Before Buying Fish

    Many aquarium fish are sold while juvenile.

    Do not assume the size in the shop represents the animal's mature dimensions.

    Before buying, check:

    • adult length
    • group requirements
    • temperament
    • swimming behaviour
    • temperature
    • water chemistry
    • minimum suitable aquarium dimensions
    • compatibility

    Planning around the adult fish helps avoid overcrowding and incompatible combinations later.

    Schooling and Social Fish Need Appropriate Groups

    Some freshwater fish naturally live in groups and should not be purchased as isolated individuals simply because buying one is cheaper.

    Other species may become territorial when kept together.

    This is why stocking cannot be reduced to a simple number of fish per litre.

    Research the behavioural requirements of each species, not just its physical size.

    Introduce New Fish Carefully

    Once your aquarium is cycled and appropriate fish have been selected, avoid simply opening the bag and immediately tipping everything into the aquarium.

    Temperature and water chemistry can differ between the transport water and your aquarium.

    Follow an appropriate acclimation process for the species and source.

    Also avoid adding shop transport water unnecessarily where disease or contamination is a concern.

    Observe New Fish Closely

    After introduction, watch how the animals behave.

    Look for:

    • normal swimming
    • normal breathing
    • feeding
    • aggression
    • hiding
    • unusual surface-gasping
    • clamped fins
    • loss of balance
    • lethargy

    RSPCA Australia notes that healthy tropical fish should generally be alert, swim without undue effort and display normal fin posture, while persistent abnormal swimming or other obvious physical changes may indicate poor health.

    Don't Overfeed

    More food does not mean healthier fish.

    Uneaten food decomposes and adds to the aquarium's waste load, while excessive feeding can contribute to poor water quality. RSPCA Australia identifies overfeeding as one factor that can overwhelm biological filtration.

    Feed an appropriate diet and amount for the species you keep.

    Observe whether food is actually being eaten rather than automatically adding the same large quantity every day.

    Overfeeding Can Also Encourage Snail Populations

    If small hitchhiking snails are present, excess food can support a much larger visible population.

    Perform Regular Partial Water Changes

    Cycling an aquarium does not mean you never need to change the water again.

    Nitrate and other dissolved compounds accumulate over time.

    Avoid Completely Replacing All the Water as Routine Maintenance

    A normal aquarium water change is generally partial.

    The goal is to manage waste—not sterilise the entire tank.

    Don't Wash Your Filter Media Under Chlorinated Tap Water

    This is one of the classic beginner mistakes.

    Much of the biological filtration occurs on the high-surface-area media inside the filter.

    Aggressively washing that media under chlorinated tap water can damage the beneficial bacterial colony.

    RSPCA Australia recommends lightly rinsing clogged filter media in a bucket of removed aquarium water rather than tap water and warns against over-cleaning it.

    You want to remove excessive debris without trying to make biological media sterile.

    Don't Replace Every Filter Component at Once Without a Reason

    If all established biological media is thrown away simultaneously, you can remove a large proportion of the bacterial population responsible for processing fish waste.

    Replace consumable filter media according to the manufacturer's purpose and instructions, but preserve established biological filtration where appropriate.

    If major filter maintenance is necessary, monitor ammonia and nitrite afterwards.

    Loss or failure of biological filtration can cause ammonia to rise.

    A Simple Weekly Aquarium Routine

    Once the aquarium is stable, a routine might include:

    Observe the Fish

    Check behaviour, appetite and appearance.

    Test Water as Appropriate

    Monitor the parameters relevant to the aquarium, particularly when something changes.

    Partial Water Change

    Replace an appropriate portion with properly conditioned water.

    Clean Accessible Substrate

    Water

    • Has tap water been properly conditioned?
    • Is the temperature suitable for the intended fish?
    • Is the pH/water chemistry appropriate for those species?

    Biological Filter

    • Has the aquarium been cycled?
    • Can the biofilter process the waste source?
    • Are ammonia and nitrite reading zero before stocking?

    Fish

    • Have I researched adult size?
    • Have I checked compatibility?
    • Do schooling species have an appropriate group planned?
    • Am I avoiding overstocking?

    Maintenance

    • Do I have an aquarium-only bucket?
    • Do I have a siphon or gravel cleaner?
    • Do I know how I will perform partial water changes?
    • Do I know not to clean the biological filter with soap or chlorinated tap water?
